In a major political development, the AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) have officially announced their alliance for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections 2026. The announcement was made during a joint press conference in New Delhi on Friday, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah confirming the partnership.
Amit Shah declared that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) will contest the elections in Tamil Nadu together, under the leadership of Edappadi K Palaniswami at the state level and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the national level.
“AIADMK, BJP, and all alliance parties will fight the 2026 Tamil Nadu Vidhan Sabha elections together as NDA,” Shah stated.
He also dismissed rumors about AIADMK placing any pre-conditions for the alliance, saying, “There was no demand from AIADMK.” Shah reminded everyone that AIADMK has been a part of the NDA since 1998 and praised the strong working relationship between PM Modi and late Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa.
Interestingly, the alliance confirmation came a day after K Annamalai stepped down from contesting for the Tamil Nadu BJP unit chief post. Annamalai played a key role in strengthening BJP’s presence in Tamil Nadu and was appreciated by Shah for his organizational skills.
Earlier in March, Edappadi K Palaniswami had met with Amit Shah in New Delhi, signaling the ongoing talks. Now with the alliance officially confirmed, both parties are ready to challenge the ruling DMK in the 2026 polls.
Back on March 28, K Annamalai had called the 2026 elections a crucial opportunity to dethrone DMK, accusing the party of corruption and poor governance. He emphasized that Tamil Nadu is facing a rare five-cornered political contest and said,
“The DMK should be removed from power, and votes should not get divided among opposition parties.”
He also highlighted that alliance decisions are made by BJP’s national leadership after careful evaluation by various internal committees.
With this alliance, the political battle for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026 is heating up. The NDA, under AIADMK’s leadership in the state, is set to take on the ruling DMK in what promises to be a high-stakes election.
